August 17-21, 2020 – Vancouver
The cornerstone of Andrew’s teaching work is a one-week 40-hour summer intensive. Twelve tap dancers from around the world convene in Vancouver to study with Andrew and a select group of guest teachers. Past teachers have included vernacular dance artist Nathan Bugh, tap dancer and historian Jane Goldberg, Grammy Award winning musician Shane Shanahan, and Moth Champion Storyteller Peter Aguero.
Over the course of the week participants will learn new ways to interact with the following topics, through an approach based on The Method:
- flexibility and strength
- tap dance history and traditional steps
- rudiments and progressions
- learning and understanding original choreography
- improvisation
- music and rhythm theory
- musicianship
- storytelling
In addition to the unique learning experience and special events, each participant takes home a participant package valued at more than $200!
Cohort size is limited to 12 participants to insure an intimate atmosphere that promotes individual attention and growth.
Testimonials
The environment that was created for and during the Tap Dance Freedom intensive was one full of enthusiasm, passion, hard work, love, and a huge sense of appreciation for both each individual in the room and the huge wonder that is tap dancing.”
– Kirsten, USA
As someone coming from a place where there isn’t an established tap culture or even awareness amongst the general pubic on what the dance form is, the Tap Dance Freedom Intensive introduced me to a new perspective on tap dancing. I left with a new approach on how to interpret and work on not only the steps and progressions, but also musicality and rhythm. One of the things I enjoyed most of all was the dynamic within the group. Led by Andrew’s knowledge and patience, the studio was the ultimate safe place, a space where we could just go for it, focusing on improvement and not having to worry about competition. This supportive and productive work environment provided a throughly positive and inspiring experience that I’m excited to repeat in the future.”
– Sandra, Puerto Rico
For me as a tap dancer/choreographer/instructor and educator, the Tap Dance Freedom Intensive was truly a “tap dance educational experience” because it was multi-faceted. The experience wasn’t just about learning steps, but about the history behind the steps and the people who created them, understanding music theory, rhythmic changes and patterns to improve your choreography and improvisational ability, and looking at steps that I have done for so many years from a different angle to attack them from another perspective.”
